Short of a trip to Disneyworld there are not many things our kids will bounce out of bed for. Yet each year, days prior to the Kentucky Derby, our kids gladly rise at the crack of dawn to go to the backside of Churchill Downs and watch the Derby contenders train. I, too, love the chance to watch the sun rise east of the Twin Spires and watch these beautiful animals at their finest. The excitement around the backside of Churchill during Derby Week is extraordinary and in many ways very magical. On the first Saturday of May, celebrities, dignitaries and nearly the whole world converge on our city for the fastest two minutes in sports. Yet our kids are most impressed the few days before when they are able to watch up close the real stars of this event – the celebrities on all fours.

Faithful Families

Those who know our Russell family know we have had a special bond with the Stone family for several generations. Dave Stone is our current pastor and succeeded my father in-law at Southeast Christian Church. His father, Sam Stone, a retired pastor and publisher of the “Christian Standard” magazine, and his wife Gwen have been long time friends of my in-laws. (In fact Mrs. Gwen and my mother-in-law, Judy, are from the same small town in Indiana.) I was privileged to capture a few special photos of Mr. Sam Stone, Dave and Dave’s son Sam recently after a Christian Academy of Louisville baseball game. Knowing these generations of the Stone Family makes Dave’s “Faithful Families” series of books even better.

In his blog post this week, my father-in-law, Bob Russell, uses a story of our son Chapman to encourage us to never lose our wonder of the awesomeness of God.

EXCERPT: “Chapman, named after my dad who was affectionately nicknamed ‘Chap,’ is completely transparent and unashamed of his love for the Lord. When riding with family in the car, he will occasionally challenge everyone, ‘Raise your hand if you love Jesus!’ ‘Raise your hand if you hate the devil!’ He commented to me the other day just out of the blue, ‘The devil is dumb, Pop.’ Knowing the Bible states that Satan is ‘crafty,’ I inserted, ‘Well, Satan’s not dumb but he is evil.’ ‘Yeah, Satan is really evil!’ he concurred.”

Fathers & Sons

Several months ago while visiting my family on Lake Guntersville, Alabama, I was thankful to have captured this pic of my brother as he was splitting some firewood while his oldest son watched. I thought it was so precious and I have specific memories of my father doing the same thing with him when he was his son’s age! I love my brother dearly, and am so proud of the man he has become and the Godly father he is to his three boys!

When You Dream…Dream Big!

So thankful our little men were able to fulfill a dream of playing in a NFL stadium when this past Sunday their little Lyndon Lightning Mitey Mite football team played after the Colts v Dolphins game in Lucas Oil Stadium. Here’s to dreaming it won’t be the last time!

May we all joyously celebrate the risen King and the magnificent Easter promise: “If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who lives in you.” (Romans 8:11) Happy Easter!

Sweet Home Alabama

Nearly 11 years ago my baby brother informed us he had fallen in love with a girl he met at Samford University and was planning to marry her. Tegan Sachs was from a little, unknown-to-us town called Guntersville. It’s a beautiful little town that sits on a lake with the same name about 30 minutes outside Hunstville, Alabama. Little did we know that not only would we fall in love with her but also with the entire Sachs family — and even that little town of Guntersville. In fact, our family loved the Sachs family, the town and all of Lake Guntersville so much it has become the home of my parents and my grandparents as well. It truly has become our Sweet Home Alabama.
